Anyhow... very early this morning we got us situated in one of the host hotels for Dragon*Con. I have no idea how I found the room, but now we are sorta set to enjoy our first ever American geek-oriented convention.
At first I was rather overjoyed with the deal:
The hills were alive, with the sound of geek glee - Graphite and mechanical pencil on plain Moleskine notebook. Aprox 4 mins. |
I am also used to cons at Spain... there the only cons I attended were geared toward SciFi writers and aspiring writers, (yes, I once used to write SciFi, shock!). The whole affair there was very low key and small, nobody dressed up in costumes, there were no autograph lines, just maybe a small book signing or two apart from open forums, round tables and workshops, and the famous SciFi and Fantasy writers didn't have staff to guard them, they just roamed about freely and mingled with us, I once danced several jigs with Joe Haldeman and had a rather lengthy conversation with Orson Scott Card about how weird Spaniard cons were, for example.
So I can tell I am going to be in a total alien environment:
Realization and packing panic - Graphite and mechanical pencil on plain Moleskine notebook. Aprox 7 mins. |
Followed by: "ZOMG I HAVEN'T PACKED!!!" *Ninja packing powers, activate!*
Anyway... I really should be packing and figuring out if I can, somehow, make a sorta kinda steampunk looking outfit by using clothing already in my closet (if I pull that one off I will demand a medal people, a bad donkey medal).
Wish me luck, I have already contacted my fellow geeks and they have promised to be the Jedi master to my padwan, so I should... and I repeat *should* be OK. Photos, postings and general mayhem to come your way starting tomorrow.
I will try my best to locate Jen and get my picture taken with her on her Lady Vadore outfit.
May the Dragon*Con odds be ever in my favor... and junk.
Packing... so not amusing - Graphite and mechanical pencil on plain Moleskine notebook. Aprox 10 mins. |

I will admit to being uber jealous. I'd planned to be there Friday at least until it got sprung on me that this will be a 7 day work week. Yay employment!
Also, I think instead of steampunk you should dress up Sound of Music-esque....well, maybe not a nun!
Ahmagaahd, have a delightful trip! Hope we get to see pictures! Yaay!!
@Victoria: Aw! I feel your pain. The twist here is that I am only going to the ATL because I have to be there Tuesday for business. Since I was already driving all the way up, we figured, going over the long weekend on our own dime and just staying there until I had to go to work made sense.
@Tora: I'll try and put up as many pics as possible. I am bringing 2 cameras, extra batteries and my hotel is supposed to have wifi included with the room. If you all can't come with me, I will at least try to make it so you feel like you're there LOL
I hope you have a good time! So many of my friends who live in Atlanta have been posting that they're going. I admit, I'm a bit jealous! :)
I've always wanted to go to a Con... but I too am a padwan when it comes to such things and don't have the network of people to show me the ropes. That scares the crap out of me! :) But, I'm 2.5 hours from San Diego. And I'm thinking that ComiCon needs me to be there next year. Have a fantastic time!
