Since we haven't had an interactive Friday for a while I thought I would do something relatively easy (I say that now, just watch as it gets complicated lol).
The theme for this weekend will be animals... and masks. I am trying to exercise shape variation and letting myself take more chances with my drawings, sometimes I get restricted by trying to make everything as proportionate or at least proportionate to reality as I can, this really makes me miss a lot of design opportunities that could create very fun and cool characters.
So, I will draw as many masks as I can, and there is a fun twist, once I do all the masks and variations I can I will pick the masks I like best and make 10 artist trading cards to giveaway on the days counting down to Christmas.
To denmonstrate what I am trying to do, here is a fast exercise I did today while thinking of a jaguar:
Jaguar mask variations - graphite and mechanical pencil on plain sketchbook. Aprox 15 mins. |

Have you ever seen "Ever After"? I love the scene where her step-sister wears the horse mask... :)
I also have dragons on the brain (Cumbersmaug anyone?! ;) so a dragon mask would be cool too.
I've missed interactive Friday - nice to see it back. :)
I think a bird of paradise would make a really cool mask.
TURTLE! Of the non-ninja variety.
Great idea for an interactive Friday! I love the dragon idea already mentioned. Also, as I'm sitting in my room thinking about an animal to suggest, I am looking around at all the bald eagles on my walls and dresser. Could you do a bald eagle mask?
I spent a couple minutes mentally browsing through the animal kingdom, and I kept noticing EARS. Like the little round ears on the ermine, or the can’t-miss-‘em great big ears of the Fennec fox. So, those are my two: ermine (in white, for winter), and Fennec fox.
A walrus might be interesting. Or a bushbaby.
Mmm, challenge. How about an Echidnae mask?
A lion and/or a mouse: I am interested in how you'd handle the proportions of a mane or a long snout. (And, since I'm thinking of bizarre mask shapes, I find myself wondering how one would go about designing a fish mask. Has that ever been attempted? Now I'll be thinking about that all day...)
What about a seahorse? That might be kinda cool!
Loving all the ideas! If you're feeling like more ideas, why not a frog?
I keep thinking of either an elephant or a peacock. :-)
Probably too late to the party to have my vote count for much, but I figure it's worth a shot. I have Life of Pi on the brain more than usual these last couple months, thanks to the movie release, so of course the first two things that popped into my head were a tiger and a meerkat. A zebra would be cool too!
