Doodle 150 - Playing Around

And so here it is, the last Friday of the year.

2012 is coming to a close at an incredible speed and we are running to meet 2013.

Today I had a bunch of work at the office before heading out. I have a wedding to attend to, so I'll be out of town for several days, I will still doodle though, like always.

Anybody has started making resolutions? I normally don't, because they are incredibly easy to forget, but I started early, I decided I wanted to be more active and healthier to feel happier. If I have the discipline to draw every day I can dig up some more to work out every single day without fail, so wish me luck because I can be incredibly lazy when it comes to exercise.

And now for today's doodles, I had nothing in mind, so I just started to draw and these came out:

Doodle 111 - Fairy Tales

I wanted to finish my winter trading cards today, but for some reason my mind wanted to draw something else, so I opened my notebook and started doodling.

At first I wasn't sure what I wanted to draw, but I soon decided it had to be this:

The Little Mermaid's Last Farewell - graphite and mechanical pencil on plain Moleskine notebook. Aprox 15 mns.

 I was maybe 12 when I saw the Disney's version of the Little Mermaid, before that I had grown up knowing only the original Hans Christian Andersen version. In it, the Little Mermaid gives away her tongue to the Sea Witch in order to become human, be with the prince she fell in love with and gain an immortal soul. She looses her family and home in the process and discovers that each step she takes on her human legs tortures her with incredible pain.

Despite it all she seems to be gaining the prince's heart, until he eventually falls in love with the princess of a neighboring country. The sisters of the Little Mermaid try to save her by exchanging their hair for an enchanted knife from the Sea Witch. If the Little Mermaid kills the prince and lets his blood touch her legs she would be back to being a mermaid and be saved from simply disappearing.

The poor girl can't bring herself to kill the prince, so she throws herself overboard and turns into sea foam.

It is a very sad tale of love found and eventually lost, and somehow I always loved this version much better.

After drawing that I decided I needed to draw something else since I have been slacking a bit lately.

I came up with a quick doodle:

I decided to come up with a story to explain this, and it goes sort of like this:

In an ancient kingdom there lived a powerful wizard, he served the queen and king of a prosperous and beautiful land. He was immortal and at one time had been wise and magnanimous.

After many centuries of living alone he had actually taken a wife, only to see her age and die while he remained young and healthy. Finally the loneliness had driven him mad, but he didn't let anybody notice this flaw.

One day he fell in love with a young and pretty maid from the castle. She was poor and with no family close by. After much deliberation he devised an enchantment that would make it so he could keep the young maid within his mind. After all nobody would miss her since she wasn't a princess or lady in waiting.

"This way she can always be with me, she won't die and I'll never be alone" he thought.

And so, one cold winter night he cast the spell over the sleeping maid who had never really noticed that the wizard had taken a liking to her. 

Time was different within her prison, and at first she was scared, lost and hopeless. Soon though, she began to figure out where she was, how to communicate with the wizard and slowly her strong will and intelligence allowed her to take some control of the wizard's own mind and movements.

She could peer out of his eyes into the world, study enchantments from books as he slept (she had learned to read at an early age), and finally, one day figured a way to escape.

That's all I have for now, maybe I'll figure out how it ends.

Doodle 099 - Disappearing, a sneak peek and a movie

This whole year is passing by so fast, and my doodle exercise gets a bit easier each day, slowly I am starting to feel a bit more confident on my abilities and drawing is becoming second nature again.

Last year around this time I was getting ready to start classes again, unsure of how things would pan out, still loathing myself for drawing and trying to figure out my internal struggle, from that point until now I am happy to say that, I feel better.

I have been working on the drawing for tomorrow's giveaway. It took me a long time to figure out what I wanted to draw, I agonized a bit over it to be sincere, and for a moment there I thought I wouldn't be able to come up with something beautiful enough to show you guys my appreciation, but I kept trying, and finally today, I managed to come up with the something.

Before I show you a teensy sneak peak of it, I will share today's doodle:

 I am not really sure how to explain it, I guess she is a ghost that dissolves every morning. She never speaks, just waits, for what? Nobody seems to know, but she has an enigmatic and hopeful expression, as if she were sure that, whatever she is waiting for, will eventually arrive.

 I won't give much more away, I just hope you guys like it when you see it. I will leave it as a sketch since that's the spirit I want to carry with this blog, whoever takes it home will be able to notice all my scribbles, retracings, etc, which I think is fun.

And finally, a short movie review.

Yesterday I retreated from the whole U.S. election suspense (I am not good at suspense), and decided to watch something different on Netflix.

Andrei had bookmarked this movie for us to see together, I had so wanted to see it when it was out in theaters, but never got around to it.

Departures, a film by Yôjirô Takita

Departures is a Japanese film that tells the story of an struggling cello player who sees his dreams of being part of an orchestra dashed. This prompts a soul searching journey that takes him back to his rural hometown.

There he accidentally finds himself taking a job in the trade of casketing, which is the art of preparing the dearly departed before they are placed on the casket.

The film is beautifully shot, the actors are very good and the movie itself is incredibly moving, I found myself feeling misty eyed every now and again.

I can say I now know why this film won an academy award in the foreign film category. I really recommend it, but get a box of tissues and a hot cup of tea when you watch.

Doodle 096 - We Still Have Each Other

We were away for less than 48 hours, but I truly feel we were gone for nearly a week. We did so many new things and saw so many cool/wonderful ones, that it feels like we crammed a couple of weeks of fun in a very short space of time.

Doodle 091 - Valkyrie and Elf

I have been working on setting up a store for everybody that has been asking about purchasing prints. I asked a friend who is an illustrator about where she would recommend I set up shop.

She pointed me in the right direction and I am happy to say I'll probably have something up and running either by the end of this week or just in time for the 100th doodle giveaway. Yay!

Hopefully once it is set up and orders go out the finished product looks good and you guys are happy with it. Also, I am trying to keep the drawings as close to the original as possible, very minor edits so the levels are right.

Anyway, I'll make sure to let everybody know when I get my shop set up and ready.

Since I was poking around with that project I ended up just doing 2 very quick doodles:

Doodle 085 - Preparing for All Hallows' Eve and misc rambling

On yesterday's post LeAnn said she wondered how I decide what to draw since she seems to draw blanks often.

I thought I would give you guys a bit of insight, now, I am not saying this is a fool proof way or even the right way to do it, it just works for me more often than not:

After work I normally take a bit of a breather, play a bit of a video game, watch a show or two, have dinner with Andrei and we talk about our day, before 8 p.m. I sit down in front of my computer, gather all my drawing supplies, put on some headphones and start playing whatever I feel like listening to at the moment.

Right now I am using Spotify at home and work, I find that music helps to keep me focused, I have quite a bit of a case of ADD, my mind races from one thing to another and I work better with multiple projects going on at once, but I try to concentrate my efforts to come up with ideas and music helps with that.

The music I prefer while drawing are soundtracks, closely followed by classical music and melancholic songs.

Once I have that down I start looking at my pinterest, tumblr and devianART feeds, I try to follow people that pin/blog/photograph interesting things, like historical clothing and costumes, architecture, art and yes a lot of geek related stuff.

Every day I see brand new things that can jolt my imagination, sometimes I will try to do my own version of a photo, others I'll start thinking about a story I want to tell sparked by what inspired me and then I start drawing whatever images I make up in my head.

This works often for me, other times I am just not in the mood to create anything at all, be it out of exhaustion, laziness, or just "because". In that case I just sit myself down, let myself browse the internet looking at silly videos of cats, and start throwing lines onto my notebook until something starts taking shape.

Not every day is a good one, sometimes all I want to do is crawl into bed and make up an excuse as to why I didn't draw, but first Andrei would nag me about it, and then I would nag myself about it thinking about the fact that you guys know I have to post every day and you are there waiting lol.

So I just keep trying until I come up with something. Of course one last thing is important: I try not to second guess myself too much, if I want to draw something I just do, no matter how weird, silly or ridiculous it might seem. Anything goes really.

It is Elphaba on a gathering trip to collect herbs and other ingredients before All Hallow's Eve. The glass pumpkin/skull lantern isn't too bright as to not call attention to herself and can scare hostiles away.

Doodle 082 - Testing

What a weekend, we truly had a blast, but tonight I am exhausted.

We finally made it back home and now I better get ready for the week.

I was rather tired and really had to fight myself in order to do today's doodles... I really wanted to just go to bed or watch TV instead, but I decided to try and draw something.

I  have to keep experimenting with different drawing styles, and that's what I did today. I am not sure if I like these at all, but trying new things out and experimenting is what I need most right now.

Also, I have been thinking about doing a giveaway to mark the 3 month 0r maybe the 100th mark of doodling, I am just not sure what I would give away since I don't really consider any of my doodles good enough to give away yet.

I might work on a watercolor piece and use that as a prize, what do you guys think?

Doodle 075 - Myths and Legends 2 (Interactive Friday)

There went another great weekend, spent most of the day today cleaning the house, so by the time I sat down to draw I was rather tired, still, I tried my best to draw as many mythical creatures as I could before having to call it a night.

Again, thanks so much for all of your suggestions, I learned a whole bunch of new stories and myths thanks to you guys, to be sincere I love myths, legends and fables, so I had a ton of fun researching everything and reading up.

Random fact about me: I used to be an student in the History and Anthropology department of my university back at Spain. Art was my first choice, but due to circumstances I ended up with my second love: Anthropology.  Of course things didn't stay that way and I managed to go back to art in the end.

Anyway, first today is Marebabe:"I'll go with my first thought: Pegasus, the winged horse!"

Oooh pegasus, I love it too, I really haven't practiced my horse anatomy and they are such an amazing mass of musculature and power that it can be very intimidating to tackle them, but I did my best, note to self: work on more horse anatomy drawings:

I had never heard of this mythical creature, so I was very excited to research it and now I have a lot of curiosity to learn more about Australian native culture and legends.

Having a wonderful weekend so far, I got to stay home, relax, watch TV and play video games. It doesn't sound very exciting, but for us it is a perfect way to unwind.

Again, you guys gave me great inspiration, I really love to play with you all, mostly because I get to draw things I had never thought of trying out before!

So I looked up Bast, I ended up with results for Bastet, who is Bastet you ask? Why it is only one of my favorite ancient Egypt gods:

 She was suppossed to be a protector of Lower Egypt, the Pharaoh and later Rah. I tried to depict her as someone who I would like to have as my bodyguard, fierce, but at the same time protective.

I was also very intrigued by Ratatoskr (seriously, a mythological squirrel that runs up and down Yggdrasil ), I had never heard of him/her/it, so I googled it and I just had to try and draw it:

Doodle 069 - The Message and more mail!

Today I want to share more reader artwork. Like I have said before, I do read your e-mails and each of your comments and it means a lot to me when I get artwork from you guys.

Amanda sent over an awesome set of drawings she did for her children, she said that she used to draw and even taught herself to paint during college, but life got crazy and she forgot about it. She was inspired by my daily drawings and got to drawing.

I can't really tell you guys how happy it makes me when someone starts drawing again thanks to my silly doodles, because you are part of my daily inspiration to never skip a day, so if I can inspire you guys as well it really makes me feel good about this project.

I imagine she is a young queen who has been sent away for her protection during times of war and she dreads the bad news that always come with the messenger birds.

Doodle 065 - Ice Princess and Agent of Mischief

Another week that is flying by, to be sincere I barely know where the whole year is going, I am enjoying October to the fullest and the weather is finally starting to cool off, slowly, but surely.

Today I drew a couple of things, first a Snow Princess:

Doodle 062 - Geese, Clouds and Inspiration

A new month, a new week and a new set of doodles.

When I first began drawing again I did so for me, to regain the dreams I had lost and try to hang onto what little sanity I have left (or display hehe), so it was very surprising to find that I had inspired people to try and draw as well.

One such person is LeAnn, I read each of your comments and e-mails and try to keep up with answering, so when I opened my e-mail one day and saw that one of you guys had actually sent me one of your drawings it made me very happy.

You see, for a long time I thought I was alone, sure, I had Andrei, but when you keep things to yourself and muddle through life it can start isolating you in many ways, so now that I have all of you to share my journey it is a rather nice feeling to know that my silly doodles have helped you, afterall, you have helped me so much with your encouragement.

I asked LeAnn if I could share her drawing, she said yes. She wrote that she used to love drawing, but after a while she stopped and lost confidence on her talent, all that sounds very familiar to me, since I find myself on the same boat. Now she is just re-starting after reading and watching my own doodles day by day:

 I want to encourage everybody who has ever lost confidence to keep trying, it is hard, I know, but once you start your own journey and keep on at it, you will find yourself learning new things, wanting to figure things out and creating things you never thought you had the skills for.

And now for today's doodles; first I just drew something very simple and silly... yes, it is a calf sitting inside of a bag... I don't know, sometimes I start things and decide to just let them be. At least it is cute.

I think that's what geese around town see themselves since they pretty much rule the roost.

It is a storm shaper, she uses a special paddle to create storm systems.

Doodle 054 - Fairy Tales (part 2)

Another Sunday, another batch of interactive doodles over.

First I will post the villains: Rumpelstiltskin, he was harder to draw than I expected, I went with a more impish/devilish version of him.

 And last, but tot least, steampunk Hansel and Gretel. They have grown up, Gretel is a sorceress and Hansel is an engineer/inventor of sorts. Together they try to prevent other kids from being attacked by witches, wizards and other supernatural creatures creeping the the forests.

[Update]: OK you can tell I'm ready to turn in for the night when I forget one doodle... anyhow, I also did a small drawing of Buttercup from the Princess Bride.

It is one of my favorite movies, long story short, I teased Andrei about the fact that Buttercup never said "I do" to Humperdinck hence not really marrying him before Westley came to the rescue... because... well, I never said "I do" during our original wedding. I might tell you guys that story one day if you would like. It does have an awesome ending though.

Doodle 053 - Fairy Tales (part 1)

Wow! So many cool suggestions yesterday/today. I might have to draw them all, really.

Today I was able to sleep way more than I have in the past 2 weeks. As an average I have been getting about 3 to 4 hours a day, this has made me rather sadder and more tired than usual, plus more prone to migraines.

Needless to say, today I feel much better, but as a side effect of finally relaxing I was very lazy and barely did anything of significance. To be sincere, I finally sat down to draw at about 7 p.m., which is late for me any day and specially late on a weekend and I didn't set foot outside at all.

It has been a weird week anyway, but it ended in quite a sweet note. A good friend, Amy, wrote an incredibly sweet entry on her blog about me. It reminded me, yet again, of what an incredible collection of wonderful friends I have managed to meet over the years.

I keep saying this, but it is true, I just don't know what I have done to deserve such wonderful people in my life. The sole fact that I managed to find Andrei, for example, over all the thousands of miles across us was an amazing oddity on its own, but as I have grown and worked I have met people that have touched my life in so many great ways, encouraged me and welcomed me into their lives as if I had always been part of them. Truly remarkable, isn't it?

Anyway, sappy moments aside, here are today's Fairy Tale drawings. I had to do some research on some of them since I hadn't heard of these characters before, or I had heard of them, but forgotten them overtime. So, in no particular order, here they are:

First off, Red Riding Hood. She was a very popular choice! I steampunked her some as well, partly by request, partly by personal preference lol. She carries her own ax, and she surely knows how to use it. The vials on her belt hold different potions/enchantments to guard off malicious wooden spirits.

Next up is Aladdin's Genie, as I worked on it and took a quick picture I realized it looks a little bit like Andrei, lol I thought that was funny anyway.

I had never heard of Jack Spratt and his wife, but thanks to google I found out they are from a nursery rime. I love learning new things/stories, so that was fun.

And finally (for today), Scheherazade. I had heard of her before, maybe by another name (I read Fairy Tales like I breathed air as a kid), but I had forgotten about her completely until I researched and remembered. She is proof that being well read and shrewd can save your life.

Ah that was fun for today. Don't worry, I have actually started on the villains (Rumplestitskin and Baba Yaga for example) and have ideas for the rest of the suggestions I have received. Doodle 042 - Ginkgo Leaf Fairy

It is finally starting to feel like Fall here in Florida... to us it begins with cooler mornings and random trees deciding to get completely naked from one day to the other while the rest of the woods just sticks around with their green leaves and what I would like to think of as embarrassed tree feelings for their exhibitionist arboreal friends... I say this because we have one such tree by the apartment.

It is always the first one to shed all its leaves and the first one to put them back on... then loose them in the cold and has to sprout them again later on hehehe.

 Oh and yes, our days are still rather hot, at least on the mid 80's and they probably will stay like that for a while. The humidity has been way lower lately, so it is awesome outside, perfect picnic weather!

Doodle 026 - Painting, Fox and Dragon

Alright, I managed to finish the bear I started on Friday. It was quite a task, in between my messed up hand and the fact that I hadn't painted anything in so long... well, it isn't the best of paintings by any means, but I am proud of myself for not giving up on it and finishing it.

I added some textures at the end to create the background and a bit of depth on the bear itself.

A Beary Haunted Butler (digital painting) - Photoshop. I think it took me 5 hours or more, I lost track of time on this one.

I was pretty exhausted after I was done with the bear, so I decided to just do a couple of super quick sketches. You can tell I am tired by my sloppy line work, I was determined to get out at least 1 doodle though.

We have a hurricane heading our way, I will keep updating as long as we have power, but if it hits us head on we might be without internet, etc for a bit, so if I don't post on Monday or Tuesday, don't panic.
